Theory of oblique topological insulators

A long-standing problem in the study of topological phases matter has been to understand types fractional insulator (FTI) possible 3+1 dimensions. Unlike ordinary insulators free fermions, FTI are characterized by \Theta ? -angles, long-range entanglement, and fractionalization. Starting from a simple family \mathbb{Z}_N display="inline">?N lattice gauge theories due Cardy Rabinovici, we develop class based on physical mechanism oblique confinement modern language generalized global symmetries. We dub these insulators. Oblique TIs arise when dyons—bound states electric charges monopoles—condense, leading order, emergent one-form symmetries, gapped boundary not realizable 2+1-D alone. Based theory, present continuum quantum field (TQFTs) for TI involving fluctuating two-form fields. show explicitly that TQFTs capture both symmetries orders seen theory. also demonstrate exhibit universal “generalized magnetoelectric effect” presence background Moreover, characterize TIs, finding new set studied previously kinds TQFTs.
